Deputy General Counsel

As the first Deputy General Counsel at the company, you will collaborate with the General Counsel to help build the legal function from scratch and manage the wide-ranging substantive legal needs of the company.  This is a critical role with high autonomy, responsibility, and opportunities to collaborate with business and technical leads.  Hiring for this role will prioritize action-oriented attorneys who can facilitate business growth while minimizing risk in a pragmatic, adaptable fashion.  You will have responsibility for helping to scale a cross-functional compliance team in the most heavily regulated industry in America.  You will be responsible for negotiating and reviewing a wide range of commercial instruments, while helping to build systems that streamline both processes.  You will help perform, manage, and scale other legal functions as needed, including corporate, environmental, and human resources.   

Responsibilities

As Deputy General Counsel, you will have a broad range of responsibilities, including:

  • Working cross-functionally to mitigate compliance risk across the organization while facilitating business objectives and reducing compliance friction
  • Advising on export-control compliance programs
  • Designing and managing classified data practices
  • Negotiating, drafting, and reviewing a wide variety of commercial agreements
  • Overseeing the buildout of a contracts management function
  • Working with the General Counsel to manage and scale other legal portfolios as needed

Basic Qualifications

  • J.D degree.
  • 9+ years of legal experience (including clerkships).
  • Substantial experience with export controls, classification, or commercial contracts.

Additional Requirements

  • Willing to work extended hours and weekends as needed
  • This position is based in Los Angeles, CA and requires being onsite full-time – hybrid and remote work will not be considered

Compensation and Benefits

The base salary range for this role is $175,000–$250,000 annually.

Compensation bands are determined by role, level, location, and alignment with market data. Individual level and base pay is determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on job-related skills, education, experience, and internal equity. Please note that the stated salary range is an estimate and may be adjusted based on market conditions, business needs, or other factors. In addition to base salary, for full-time hires, you may also be eligible for long-term incentives, in the form of stock options, and access to medical, vision & dental coverage as well as access to a 401(k) retirement plan.
