Michels Canada is looking for a Director, Heath, Safety and Environment (HSE) to join our team in Nisku. In this role, you will lead the development and growth of Michels Canada’s Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) program across the country. You’ll partner with senior leaders to strengthen a culture of continuous improvement—advancing people, strategy, tools, processes, and standards that support safe, complaint and profitable operations. This position is based out of our South office in Nisku, AB.


Responsibilities:

  • Maintaining and promoting a strong safety culture for all employees, vendors, and customers and following all safety policies, procedures, and regulations. Identifying and communicating workplace hazards and correcting or seeking assistance in correcting unsafe actions or conditions.
  • Leading and developing a team of HSE professionals and support staff across multiple locations in Canada.
  • Providing strategic direction and oversight for Health, Safety, and Environment on projects.
  • Establishing the HSE vision and strategy, partnering with senior management and operations leaders to ensure effective execution.
  • Guiding, supporting and verifying consistent implementation of the HSE program across Canadian business units.
  • Monitoring and staying current on HSE legislation and regulatory requirements, translating requirements into practical guidance that informs business decisions.
  • Identifying, building and maintaining relationships with external professional organizations and regulatory groups; representing Michels Canada at networking events and conferences.
  • Applying strong expertise in risk assessment and mitigation, incident investigation, and emergency response planning.
  • Leading and sustaining productive relationships with regulatory agencies and external stakeholders.
  • Modeling Michels Canada’s culture and core values by following company standards and policies. Leading through trust, constructive relationships, and candid, fair feedback—demonstrating competence and character and inspiring confidence in others.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field (or an equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • 10–15 years of progressive HSE experience, including time in a comparable leadership role.
  • Experience working with unionized workforces is considered an asset.
  • Strong organization, communication (written and verbal), and interpersonal skills, with the ability to coach and train others.
  • Proven leadership capability, with a collaborative approach and the confidence to influence at all levels of the organization.
  • Valid driver’s license for the type(s) of vehicles driven, with an acceptable driving record as determined by the Michels Review Team.
  • Ability to travel to project sites and office locations across Canada, as required.
