Specialist Lab Piping Designer (Buildings)

General Matter · Los Angeles, CA

About this role

About the Company

General Matter is enriching uranium in America. Our mission is to restore our country’s ability to make nuclear fuel. Our fuel will help power AI, manufacturing, and other critical industries. It will power our next generation of reactors. Ultimately, it will power our national ambitions. We were incubated by Founders Fund, like Anduril and Palantir before us, and we are backed by top tier investors.  Our lean, world-class team of engineers and operators is applying a first-principles approach to solving the problem of nuclear fuel production. We are a mission-driven company with a culture of urgency, accountability and transparency.

About the Role

We’re looking for a Specialist Lab Piping Designer to lead the design of complex fluid and gas distribution systems for our most sensitive R&D, industrial, and high-stakes infrastructure projects. This role sits at the intersection of process engineering and architectural coordination, requiring a designer who understands that a wet lab or a cleanroom is only as functional as the high-purity systems supporting it.

You will be responsible for architecting the routing, containment, and point-of-use delivery for specialized gases and high-purity water systems. Working within our Facility Design team, you will ensure that hazardous and inert gases, vacuum systems, and ultra-pure liquids are integrated seamlessly into the building’s structural and mechanical fabric, adhering to the highest standards of safety and contamination control.

Responsibilities

  • Design and engineer comprehensive laboratory piping systems, including high-purity specialty gases such as N2, compressed air, vacuum, and RODI (Reverse Osmosis/Deionized) water systems.
  • Prepare high-fidelity design packages in Revit, owning the 3D coordination of sloped waste lines, gas manifolds, and overhead service carriers within complex ceiling voids.
  • Specify materials and components appropriate for the medium, ranging from orbitally welded stainless steel for high-purity gases to acid-resistant neutralized waste piping for wet labs.
  • Develop P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams) and flow schematics that define system logic, pressure regulation, and emergency shut-off protocols.
  • Lead multidisciplinary coordination to ensure piping routes do not conflict with structural bracing, HVAC ductwork, or electrical busways, maintaining strict architectural clearances.
  • Ensure code compliance with NFPA 45 (Standard on Fire Protection for Laboratories using Chemicals), NFPA 99 (Health Care Facilities Code), and ASME B31.3 (Process Piping).
  • Support construction and commissioning by performing submittal reviews and technical field inspections to verify the integrity of specialized joints and purges.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or Architecture.
  • 8+ years of experience in specialized piping design for R&D, healthcare, or semiconductor facilities.
  • Advanced proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD, specifically in creating parametric pipe types and complex 3D assemblies for laboratory equipment.
  • Deep technical knowledge of laboratory-grade plumbing, gas cabinet integration, and high-purity water generation.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, balancing the precision of micro-level piping details with the scale of massive industrial facility design.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Professional Engineer (PE) or AIA license is highly preferred.
  • Experience with BIM automation (Dynamo or Python) to streamline pipe routing and automated pressure drop calculations.
  • Prior experience in nuclear or pharmaceutical environments, where containment and high-integrity piping are mission-critical.
  • Familiarity with seismic bracing for piping systems in high-seismic zones.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate complex P&IDs into clear architectural layouts for project stakeholders.

Why General Matter

  • Scale: Work on specialized systems for a massive, first-of-its-kind enrichment facility.
  • Complexity: Solve the unique challenges of routing hazardous and high-purity media in a high-security industrial context.
  • Innovation: Join a team that values digital engineering and "hands-on" technical excellence from design through construction.

About General Matter

General Matter is enriching uranium in America. Our missio n is to restore US leadership in nuclear fuel. This fuel will power AI, manufacturing, and other critical industries. It will enable the next generation of reactors and the reactors powering ~20% of the US grid today. Ultimately, it will power our national ambitions. If we don’t do it, no one will. Half a century ago, the US held a majority of all global enrichment capacity. Today we are forced to rely on foreign powers and their state-backed, state-controlled entities for the nuclear fuel that powers nearly 20% of our nation’s grid. We are fixing this. By uniting the nation’s finest minds from technology, nuclear engineering, national security, and finance, we are building a new way to enrich uranium, here at home. The fuel we are enriching will be cheaper, more reliable, and more abundant than ever before, and it will result in a stronger America. As we build our team we are seeking the highest caliber engineers, technologists, creative minds, and numbers savants. We offer high standards, extreme ownership, copious autonomy, deep trust, and zero politics. We believe that despite our ambitious mission, our chances of su...
