Who we are
About Stripe
Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform for businesses. Millions of companies—from the world’s largest enterprises to the most ambitious startups—use Stripe to accept payments, grow their revenue, and accelerate new business opportunities. Our mission is to increase the GDP of the internet, and we have a staggering amount of work ahead. That means you have an unprecedented opportunity to put the global economy within everyone’s reach while doing the most important work of your career.
About the team
Stripe Billing helps businesses automate and scale how they charge for products and services. Our team builds the systems that define pricing models, power subscriptions and invoicing, process usage-based billing, and help users manage revenue operations with flexibility and confidence.
As businesses grow, their billing needs become more complex. Billing works across product surfaces and backend systems to make that complexity manageable through reliable, extensible infrastructure and thoughtful product-platform design. This role sits across the Billing organization and will help shape the technical direction of core systems used by a broad range of Stripe users.
What you’ll do
As a Staff Software Engineer on Billing, you’ll lead the design and evolution of backend systems that power some of Stripe’s most important product experiences. You’ll work at the intersection of platform architecture and user impact, building the foundations that allow businesses to model, launch, and scale new ways of charging their customers.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys owning complex technical problems end to end: defining architecture, improving system design, making pragmatic tradeoffs, and partnering closely with product and engineering leaders. You’ll help Billing become more scalable, composable, and adaptable while mentoring other engineers and raising the quality of technical decision-making across the organization.
Responsibilities
- Lead the architecture and delivery of foundational backend systems that support subscriptions, invoicing, and usage-based billing
- Design extensible platform capabilities that enable new product use cases while preserving reliability, performance, and ease of iteration
- Drive technical direction across teams by making clear architectural choices, aligning stakeholders, and turning long-term strategy into concrete execution
- Partner closely with product, engineering, and adjacent platform teams to build systems that balance user needs with maintainability and scale
- Improve the quality of system design and domain modeling across the organization through technical leadership, design reviews, and hands-on guidance
- Mentor senior engineers and help develop the next generation of technical leaders within Billing
- Contribute directly to implementation when needed, especially in high-leverage or technically complex areas of the codebase
Who you are
We’re looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the role. If you meet these requirements, you are encouraged to apply. The preferred qualifications are a bonus, not a requirement.
Minimum requirements
- 15+ years of software engineering experience building and operating large-scale backend or platform systems
- Demonstrated track record of leading the technical design and delivery of complex, ambiguous product/platform initiatives that span multiple teams or major product areas and deliver measurable business impact.
- Strong systems design skills, including experience building scalable, extensible architectures in domains with evolving requirements
- Experience working with distributed and asynchronous systems in production environments
- Proven ability to influence technical direction across multiple teams and to drive alignment and delivery across organizational boundaries
- Regular, hands-on code contributions and code-review activity in production systems; comfortable shipping, debugging, and iterating in large codebases.
- Comfortable operating under both technical and business ambiguity: able to translate business goals into technical strategy and present recommendations to senior engineering and business stakeholders.
- Accountability for organizational outcomes — you own both your technical contributions and the success of the teams/organizations you support.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience building billing, payments, financial systems, or other configurable business platforms
- Experience with domain-driven design and strong domain modeling in complex software systems
- Experience leading re-architecture or migration efforts in mature production systems
- Experience working in large engineering organizations with substantial cross-functional and cross-team dependencies; track record of driving cross-org initiatives to completion.
- Familiarity with technologies such as Ruby, Java, Kafka, Flink, or MongoDB
