About the role

At Nu, tax efficiency and compliance are not just obligations—they are pillars that support our ability to scale and innovate. As a Tax Specialist, your primary goal will be to ensure the Total Tax Integrity of our operations. You will have a direct impact on the P&L by ensuring that every tax is calculated with pinpoint accuracy, mitigating risks, and ensuring that Nu stays ahead of complex Brazilian regulatory changes. Your role is fundamental to sustaining financial transparency for investors, auditors, and regulatory bodies.

 

You'll be responsible for

Your day-to-day will be defined by the dynamism of a complex financial operation. Your main challenges and activities will include:

  • Full compliance cycle: Leading the calculation, accounting, and technical review of direct taxes (IRPJ/CSLL – “Lucro Real” and “Presumido”) and indirect taxes (ISS, PIS, and COFINS under both cumulative and non-cumulative regimes).
  • High-precision financial reporting: Preparing and reviewing explanatory notes for the Effective Tax Rate (ETR) reconciliation (Tax Proof), as well as managing the movement and projection of deferred tax assets and liabilities.
  • Mastery of ancillary obligations: Guaranteeing the flawless delivery of complex obligations such as DES-IF, DCTFWEB, EFD-REINF, EFD-Contribuições, and ECF, ensuring that data faithfully reflects accounting reality.
  • Stakeholder and audit management: Acting as the focal point for tax inspections and audits (internal and external), defending Nu’s tax positions and maintaining the SOX (Sarbanes-Oxley Act) control environment.
  • Transfer pricing coordination: Managing Transfer Pricing workflows in partnership with external advisors, ensuring that intercompany operations comply with OECD and RFB (Brazilian Federal Revenue) rules.

To succeed in this role, we are looking for more than just technical knowledge; we need solid experience and a proven track record in high-rigor environments:

Required qualifications and experience

  • Experience in Effective Tax Rate (ETR) reconciliation: You have directly managed the bridge between accounting and taxable profit, knowing how to explain variances and project deferred taxes for public or audited companies.
  • Experience with financial institution ancillary obligations: Specific experience in filling out and reviewing DES-IF and a deep understanding of the SPED ecosystem (ECF and EFDs).
  • Background in internal controls (SOX): Practical experience in executing and reviewing internal controls, ensuring the tax process is auditable and free of deficiencies.
  • Tax project management capability: Experience coordinating transfer pricing studies and interfacing with external consultancies for strategic deliveries.
  • Education and tools: A solid degree in Accounting, Law, or related fields, with the ability to use tax engines to extract and analyze data.
  • Advanced English for reporting or interacting with global teams.

  • An analytical mindset to identify P&L discrepancies and propose root-cause remediations.
  • Resilience to handle tight monthly closing schedules and simultaneous audits.
  • Clear communication skills to translate complex tax themes for business areas.

Nice-to-have skills

  • Prior experience in the banking or payments industry.
  • Experience with the implementation of tax automation tools.
